As soon as a drum sounds, it triggers a feeling that’s difficult to explain, but clear to see. From headbanging at a rock concert to samba dancing at carnival, the rhythms of the percussion ignite a spark inside of us that few other instruments can provoke. Now, ‘We call it Drums’ in Portland is paying tribute to famous films scores with a series of shows guided by talented percussionists and their LED-lit drums.
Every strike of the drum brings a flash of color to create visually striking effects. It’s a sight (and sound) to behold, and this season, these shows will be lighting up Alberta Rose Theatre. Tickets are on sale now but spaces are limited, so make sure to get yours today.
What is ‘We call it Drums’?
It’s a concert dedicated to iconic movie soundtracks that features five talented drummers and the LED lights of their instruments. By combining live music with multicolored lights, the show brings an exciting, multi-sensory experience to Portland that’s pretty tough to beat.
During the 60-minute show, the musicians perform scores from movies including Star Wars over three acts, and each score is paired with a unique light display. Illuminated by a kaleidoscope of colors radiating from their drums, the performers start the evening with renditions of famous soundtracks. Then, an electrifying drum solo will wow the audience before the show concludes with an act dedicated to softer, slower-paced scores.
Why are drums so powerful?
We can feel the beat of a drum as much as we can hear it. The pulse in the chest, the vibrations through the body — these sounds produce a visceral reaction. Depending on the tone and speed, they can even express a feeling or mood. A strong strike of a bass drum can conjure ideas of power and grandeur, while soft, rhythmic drum beats evoke a sense of calm or mystery. One hit of a drum can say a thousand words, which is why the instrument is such a powerful component of so many movie soundtracks.
Over the next few months, this unique live drum show will be shining a light on some of the most iconic soundtracks in cinema inside Alberta Rose Theatre. Doors open 30 minutes prior to the concert start time and seats are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis in each zone. Don’t just hear the music — see and feel it too!
